DISPLACEMENT DIARIES: Navigating Challenges and Building Resilience

Updated: Jan 26

In the early hours of Tuesday, January 16th, 2024, the PlushSE16 community faced a disheartening turn of events. Our landlord, Gilbac Limited, activated eviction proceedings, leaving our dedicated team, Michael from the barbers, and the boys in the carwash Chef from the Caribbean in a state of early morning shock and displacement.

The arrival of bailiffs, equipped to secure the site, marked the beginning of a challenging chapter for PlushSE16. In the face of this disregard and displacement, questions loom large:

What do we do next?

Where do we trade temporarily? And when will the cycle of disregard for relocation rights end?

Where our priorities are:

  1. Assessing the Situation:

  2. Temporary Trading Spaces:

  3. Engaging our Community:

  4. Document and Raise Awareness:

  5. Legal Advocacy:

  6. Building Resilience:

  7. Community Rally:

In the face of displacement, PlushSE16 stands resilient, determined to overcome the challenges posed by the eviction. The journey ahead is uncertain, but with the support of the community, legal advocacy, and a commitment to building resilience, PlushSE16 is poised to rise from this setback stronger than ever. The broader question remains—when will landlords and developers recognise the vital role businesses play in the Southwark community and cease attempts to con us all out of our rightful relocation rights?

The journey toward an answer begins now, and PlushSE16 invites the community to stand together in this fight for justice and the right to staying local.
